Spider Control & Treatment Birmingham, AL
In Birmingham, AL, spiders are common. Most of them are completely harmless to humans. Only three types of spiders found in Alabama are poisonous, brown recluse, black widow, and brown widow. Sometimes it is hard to distinguish a non-poisonous spider from a poisonous one. If you suspect that you were bitten by a poisonous spider, seek medical attention immediately.
Brown Recluse Spider
Are usually 0.24 and 0.79 in (6-20 mm) long and range in color from light to dark brown with a violin-shaped darker mark on the back. While most spiders have eight eyes, recluse spiders have six eyes arranged in pairs. Brown recluse spiders build irregular, asymmetrical webs and often can be found in dry and quiet places, such as wood piles, garages, sheds, closets. These spiders have also been found in stacked bedsheets or infrequently used beds, clothes piles, in dressers, shoes, behind baseboards and pictures.
Black Widow Spiders
The most famous and widely feared spider in the world. Black widow spiders range from 0.12 to 0.39 in (3-10 mm) in size and are easily recognized by its black body with distinctive red markings. Only the bites of the female widow spiders can be dangerous to humans as they have unusually large venom glands. They construct an irregular web of tangled, sticky silken fibers and prefer to nest near the ground in dark and undisturbed places.
Brown Widow Spiders
These spiders belong to the same family as the black widow spiders that has earned its name through a popular habit of the females to eat the male directly after mating. They are not aggressive spiders but will bite in self-defense. Like the black widow, the brown widow bites are painful and may cause severe muscle pain, abdominal cramps, increased heartrate, sweating, and muscle spasms. Although there have been no reported deaths from widow spiders in 100 years, seek medical attention if bitten.
